The Power of Venus Envy

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast (March 24, 2006 at 6:37 pm)

I’m back!! This week we continue to improve the studio and make changes to ensure the highest quality show. It should show all around with new digital processors, acoustic improvements and a new digital audio workstation that I built myself! Sometimes custom jobs are the best way to go.

The bands I bring to you this week rock!! I can’t wait until you hear the awesome show I put together with their help. Check them out below. As always, please be sure to go to their sites and give their other material a listen. There is a ton of great music out there and I’m sifting through it all to bring you the best.

Grab Today’s Show

Today's SoundCast

Today’s show features the following Artists

Corday

Corday – Face Me

Envy Records recording artist Jennifer Corday has been hitting it hard over the last couple of years. Her band Corday is building a reputation that is taking California by storm. Look at the “short list” of achievements the band has accomplished (and I do mean short list because they have too many to mention).

The Orange County Music Awards – Best Live Band, Best Alternative Band, Best Female Performer, one of the L.A. Times Top 10 albums of the year, the LA Music Awards for a video and a nomination by the Southern California Music Awards for best pop rock band!!

This is no fluke. The band is for real and Jennifer is great. Face Me is just one song off a whole CD of hits.

Stop by the band’s website here where you can purchase their material and keep up with their gigs.

Breech

Breech – Easy Bake

This is where my job gets easy. When I spoke to Jennifer Corday about playing her material on the show she turned me onto Venus Envy Music.net. Jennifer started this site for female fronted bands and it is packed with great artists who rock.

One of those bands is Breech. Front vocalist Missy Gibson has a Jewel quality to her voice with a bluesy rock persona. The band blasts out an excellent mix of distorted guitars, moody keys and rocking vocals.

The song Easy Bake was presented to me off the Venus Envy compilation for the Long Beach Memorial Breast Cancer Center. Pick it up; it’s a great cause and a worthy addition to your music collection.

Crazy as it seems, the song Easy Bake as verses like roll it, pat it, put it in the oven and Holly Hobby and Easy Bake too. I mention this because the words will stick in your head if you listen to the song enough times; it’s that catchy. You may have to explain yourself if you happen to be singing it without the backing of the music!

Stop by the band’s website here, check out the Breech Bake Sale and visit the Breech Store.

Kristin Mainhart and Khromosomes

Kristin Mainhart & Khromosomes – Sign Your Name

Speaking of girls who rock Kristin Mainhart is the artist of the month! I have played the band’s CD Stranger Things extensively for my friends and it is a big hit. The songs are gripping and Kristin’s voice is mesmerizing against the backdrop of the electric canvas created by the band.

The song Sign Your Name has more than just the awesome vocals that Kristin brings to your ears. I love the mix of the very clean gits, bass, keys and turntables. There is a small guitar riff about 1:39 into the song that demonstrates the surrealistic nature of their music. The riff kind of comes at you from nowhere and is a brilliant juxtaposition along side the rhythm of the band and Kristin’s vocals.

The CD Stranger Things was released in March of 2005 and the news just gets better from there. The song, Gonna Make It will be featured in The Prince and Me 2, a Lions Gate film to be released in August. The band’s personal website and CD sales can be found directly here.

De La Vega

De La Vega – All Lies

This band will be a favorite of those who like Incubus and 311. They have had quite a lot of success by playing great gigs such as The 2004 Warped Tour and Utah’s “Big Ass Show” with heavy hitters such as Hoobastank and Sum41.

They have a ton of material, a new video and a new CD called

Innovation and even has managed to get their song Dope Ride featured on frontier airlines! I love the grungy guitar, drums and vocals. The band is quite diverse with their ability to easily switch between metal, acoustic and the more hip hop styles of 311.

The Band has parked a ton of material on PodSafe Music where I found this song.

You should stop by the band’s fan site here where you can purchase their material, check out their video and keep up with their gigs.

Annison

Anison – Over and Out

Rory, Daniel, Rocky and Jerome come to us all the way from the London area. They have been playing together in one form or another since 2003. From what I can tell they really gelled once drummer Jerome joined the band.

Drummers like Jerome amaze me with their never ending energy (think Green Day) and really define the personality of the band.

The song Over and Out has a very clean sound that gets in your face without overdriving the amps or your ears. This approach allows them to add subtle things to the mix such as a small gate on the snare, flange on the guitars or hidden keys that would otherwise get swallowed up by a harder mix. All in all the band is a great listen and I’m happy I tracked them down for you to experience.

The band will have a new download only CD out in April. Be sure to visit their site and sign up for it ahead of time.

Anison’s personal website can be found here. You can purchase theier music through Daddy Fresh Music.

Sinch

Sinch – The Power of Suggestion

Here’s another band along the metalish rock genre. The vocals remind me of Geoff Tate from Queensryche which is a compliment for sure.

The band has a new album out called Clearing the Channel. Their song Something More was just featured on Fusion TV where band member Jay Smith was featured presenting his Viditar (video mixing guitar) at the South by Southwest conference. You have to check out this video to really appreciate how this fifth member of the band mixes the video aspect of the concerts in real time; it’s incredible.

The song Power of Suggestion is a great song. I played a ton of my music for others before they end up on the show and this song was happily received. There’s not much more to say about the song other than it is a hard driving power rock song that has driving drums, great mix ups and excellent vocals.

They band has a link on PodSafe Music where I found this song. Their fan based website can be found here. You can purchase their new CD here.

Phil Lomac

Phil Lomac – No Connection

Indie Rock artist Phil Lomac brings us his acoustic rock sounds from Asheville North Carolina. The self title CD was produced and mixed by band member and brother Steve Lomac.

The song No Connection has a rhythm that reminds me of a mix of Led Zeppelin’s Babe I’m Gonna Leave You and the drum beat and vox from Tom Petty’s You Don’t Know How it Feels (A simple signature beat that even Green Day uses on Boulevard of Broken Dreams from their American Idiot album that is a virtual collage of repacked songs from the past in my opinion; ah but I digress).

The guitar work and vocals are what drove me to Phil’s material. His songs a great listen and fit well with the music I have been playing on SoundTrip.

Phil Lomac’s website here. Purchase the CD on CD Baby.

The Sunday Flies

The Sunday Files – Everglades

Here’s another song that reminds me of some rhythm guitar from Zeppelin. In the Flies case they add an Everlast feel with top notch vocals, solid harmonies and nice instrumentation. The mix is solid.

I found these guys on Garage Band where you they explain the name with the following:

I was going to the bathroom one day and a name popped into my head, The Sunday Flies.

I can’t find a whole lot of information on them but they have been getting a lot of play with this song. It’s a good song with catchy instrumentation.

You can find the Sunday Flies on MySpace and Garage Band. Purchase their CD on CD Baby.

Music is King Baby – Reprise

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast (March 1, 2006 at 3:30 pm)

Today’s show is a great mix of rock, electronic and acoustic offerings from London to LA. This show is sure to please as it continues the SoundTrip tradition of blending a whole variety of music genres into one jammin’ digital block party!

Grab Today’s Show

Click on the podcast icon below to download the show in mp3 format; it should automatically play when the download is complete (under a minute).

Today's SoundCast

Today’s show features the following Artists

The Negatones

The Negatones – Paused Upon the Rewind and The Godfather

The band has received accolades from Spin Magazine, Time Out New York and The Village Voice, worked with Jon Spencer and Chuck D, and hit the college circuit by staying in the CMJ top 200 for over 6 weeks with their previous release Snacktronica that debuted in the CMJ charts at number 2!

Sometimes there is just hype and sometimes there is more. In the Negatones case these guys live up to all the hype and more. I live 10 minutes from the post office where I pick up my cd’s and needless to say it took me 40 minutes to get home after I popped this baby into my car stereo. One song after another blared out of the speakers and I just couldn’t stop listening.

Paused Upon the Rewind is the typical flavor of the Negatones new self titled CD with hard hitting guitar, rockin’ drums, heavy driving bass and wailing vocals. I played that song back to back with the The Godfather, a funky groove funk synth blast that provides the glue between the two worlds of the band. They even manage to throw horns into the mix, and not just as some added extra’s. All in all this is one very complete CD from front to back.

Stop by the band’s website here and purchase the CD here!!

Kristin Mainhart and Khromosomes

Kristin Mainhart & Khromosomes – Chompin

Many years ago I used to go to a series of clubs in the flats overlooking the river in Cleveland. My buddy, Andy the Fish, had been there for a while and turned me onto a row of small clubs where we could enjoy cigars, good drink, play pool and most importantly, listen to some really excellent music!! This was not your typical Cleveland thrash metal, Megadeth\Metallica sect; rather it was an eclectic mix of acid jazz and electronic funk that could be enjoyed under the candle lit tables of the smaller clubs.

This style of mood music is exactly what you get with Kristin and the Zomes. Kristin’s voice is so dynamic, velvety rough, cutting and thoroughly enjoyable. I hear a lot of Poe and Portishead qualities in this music but there are also tints of Erica Badu in Kristin’s voice form a stylistic point of view.

The CD Stranger Things was released in March of 2005 and the news just gets better from there. The song, “Gonna Make It” will be featured in “The Prince and Me 2″, a Lions Gate film to be released in August. The band’s personal website and CD sales can be found directly here.

9 Ball

9 Ball – Hard Pressed

This band is a perennial favorite of the Orange County California music scene. The song is reminiscent of David Grey and Toad the Wet Sprocket. The bands sound is clean and upbeat. They are on a roll fresh off winning the 2005 Orange County Music Award for Best Indie Rock Band. They were also nominated for Best Song and that indicates the strength of the band. Well worth your time!

I hope to bring you more from this band. It would be worth your while to visit their website and check out the other offerings. In the meantime you can buy the CD here.

All Mighty Whispers

All Mighty Whispers – Thanks

This band comes to us from across the ocean out of Tuba Studio in London. They have been getting airplay with their recent release on BBC radio2, Japan’s Yellow Beat radio and making the circuits through the typical avenues for unsigned Indie bands.

It is unfortunate in some respects that the show is only 30 minutes because I usually have to decide to play one song out of many for each band. In the case of the Whispers I initially chose 6 songs from their release titled “Love Revolution”. From there, many listens later I decided on “Thanks”. This song worked well with the lineup of today’s show and demonstrates the strong vocal and acoustic quality that I feel defines the band.

The bands personal website can be found here. You can purchase the CD directly here.

Manly Footwear

Manly Footwear – Pan Head – Garagista Records

I came across Garagista records when I did a web and e-music search after listing to Kristin Mainhart. It turns out that Kristin is on a compilation record from Garagista Records called Rivertown Rock. From there I heard Panhead from Manly Footwear and the rest is SoundTrip history.

I couldn’t find a personal website for this band and look forward to hearing if they have anything more along the lines of Panhead. Fans of Los Lobos will immediately be drawn to these guys, this includes yours truly. You can hear the horns in the SoundTrip intro mashup. This is just a taste of the solid offering found in Panhead.

Garagista is a label out of New York that specializes in the jazz and folk offerings of local bands in the lower Hudson Rivertowns. Check them out here while you listen to Manly Footwear and Kristin Mainhart & Khromosomes. Buy the CD here.

King Baby

King Baby – The Well

This Southern Rock band has been getting tons of press since their latest release titled “Whole Lotta Easy”. They have had rave reviews in Music Connection Magazine, All Access, Ear Buzz and The Los Angeles Times.

The song I chose, “The Well” has a decidedly Everlast feel to it. It is a perfect mix of vocals, acoustic instruments and straight rock. Even better, this is yet another band that has brough back the guitar lead that has been missing from so many bands these days. This is simply a feel good song by a band that delivers feel good rock and roll. Stop by their site, check out the band, leave them a message, and purchase their CD.

Dusty

Dusty Hughes – Fallout

Dusty Hughes appeared on an earlier SoundTrip show and I had mentioned that I was going back and forth with what songs to feature on the show. Now I have no problem, I decided to play Fallout today as this was right up there with So Familiar.

Dusty has been busy, he worked on a soundtrack, released a Christmas CD and released So Familiar, the album, on August 23, 2005. You can pick up the 2-in-1 DVD audio disc at his web site.

Doctor Trey Special thanks go out to my Hawaiian podcaster friends Dr. Trey and JRoq for helping to get the word out. I urge everyone to check out the doc’s excellent show.

Don’t Jinx Me – All I Want to do is be Happy and Sing

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast, podcasting (February 12, 2006 at 12:48 pm)

Today I bring to you a mix of the soulful vocals of three female artists and accentuate their soft melodic style with the hard hitting guitar of three male rock bands. The mix may sound a bit weird in writing but I can assure you that it definitely sounds right on the ears!!!

Grab Today’s Show

Click on the podcast icon below to download the show in mp3 format; it should automatically play when the download is complete (under a minute).

Today's SoundCast

Check out the improvements I have made to the show by ditching the digital format for an analog mixer and upgrading to the buggy but useful Adobe Audition 2.0 (more on that soon).

Today’s show features the following Artists

Rebekah Jordan

Rebekah Jordan – Happy

Whoa, Rebekah Jordan is an artist who means business. Rebekah started at an early age, using music as a connection and an escape in a broken home at the age of 9. She’s not looking for violins here; rather Rebekah finds inspiration and a feeling of belonging through her background where music bridges the connection to both sides of her family. She is definitely in touch with that inspiration.

Rebekah has grown from the little girl who used to secretly listen to her mother play piano on Saturday mornings and play herself for her father by request. She has formed her own record label, financed and released her own EP, provided music for Kelly Clarkson and had lead roles in 2 movies.

The song “Happy” is simply that; a soulful good feeling song that brings sunshine to the ears. Visit Rebekah at her website and purchase her new 6 song EP here or get the Itunes version.

23Jinx

23Jinx – No Time for Innocence

23Jinx just released their debut CD “Curtains and Cannibals” and it’s flying off the shelves. The band comes to us from Atlanta Georgia. Atlanta is a great town for bands; its support of the local talent and mixing these artists in with top notch established bands is the primary reason we hear so much from this area. 23Jinx recently appeared at the Atlanta Music Midtown festival, the same festival that featured top artists such as The White Stripes and Black Eyed Peas. Their musical style is closer to Stripes than the peas with acoustic to electric changeups, melodic vocals and raw guitar. The band is gaining popularity and hanging out in all the right circles.

Check out Blaze and 23Jinx at their website and purchase their new CD here.

Hayley Gene

Hayley Gene – You and I

Hayley Gene is a 19 year old singer-songwriter who first showed up on stage at age 5. Since then she has toured Canada performing with a capella quartet “The 4 Corners” as well as with her father Fred Penner. Hayley is now on her own as a soloist and is gaining recognition in music circles across North America. Hayley was a 2005 finalist in the Temecula Valley Film and Music Festival and we hope to hear more from her soon on a new CD. You can keep tabs on Hayley via her personal website.

George Hrab

George Hrab – Barney’s in the Vent

George Hrab joins us once again at SoundTrip as the February artist of the month with another installment off of his solo offering Interrobang. “Barney’s in the Vent” demonstrates the diversity of the singer, musician, songwriter as George moves easily between the various Alternative, Funk, Blues and rock musical styles. Interrobang is a solid offering and should be purchased by any lover of strong grooving hard driving percussion, bass and guitar.

Check out all his material at Geologic Records, buy the CD’s here and sign up for his e-mail list here.

Erin Alden

Erin Alden – Faded

Erin Alden is another independent female vocalist who is quickly proving that the latest crop of independent artists is creating music every bit as good, if not better, than most of the standards you hear on today’s radio waves. Erin recently appeared on the latest release from Grammy nominated producer and composer Headfridge.

Erin took inspiration from her grandmother and continues along her journey with her latest single “Story of the Week” that can be purchased here. You can read more about Erin on her personal website.

CYR

Cyr – Cashmere Smile

Cyr is yet another band that comes to us from Canada. I have a feeling I called the band CYR as in “seeer” but they are most likey called by their initials “CYR”. Frontman Cory Cyr has teamed up with producer Jordan Zadorozny on drums and Pete Frolander on bass. The trio just released CYR’s debut EP “When it Rains”. Cashmenre Smile is inidcative of the edgy guitars and wistful vocals that embodies the bands style. The band recently had their song “Drama Queen” appear on CBC TV. This is a good start for Cory and friends. You can hear more from them at their personal website. Buy the EPe here.

Interrobanging Our Way through the Clear Blue 22

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast (January 30, 2006 at 5:00 am)

Each week I receive great material from artists that have put in the extra effort to present high quality, professionally produced CD’s. Please read the reviews, check out the various band links and spread the word. Much thanks goes out to all you bands who have helped make this show what it is with your submissions and words of encouragement.

Grab Today’s Show

Click on the podcast icon below to download the show in mp3 format; it should automatically play when the download is complete (under a minute).

Today's SoundCast

Today’s show features the following Artists

interrobang

George Hrab – Out of my Mind

When I first contacted George I had a pretty good idea of how solid his material was. I had no idea how talented and well rounded he is as a professional musician. The Interrobang CD is one of the best CD’s I have heard in some time.

The really astonishing aspect of this CD is that it is practically a solo performance. Nothing is done in a black hole however and George received some very excellent orchestration, advice and occasional instrumentation from those who contributed to the production.

This is CD number 5 for the vocal percussionist who has played at the White House, performed in the Astrodome, and shared a stage with Elton John. The only problem with George is not what to play but rather what not to play and that is what makes him the February artist of the month.

Check out all his material at Geologic Records, buy the CD’s here and sign up for his e-mail list here.

Dusty

Dusty Hughes – So Familiar

I grew up listening to some pretty hard stuff and this is what attracted me to So Familiar. Dusty is another artist who made me go back and forth with what songs to feature on the show. So Familiar fit and is now in the annals of SoundTrip history as it brings a bit of a harder edge to the show that I wanted to present.

Dusty has been busy, he worked on a soundtrack, released a Christmas CD and released So Familiar, the album, on August 23, 2005. You can pick up the 2-in-1 DVD audio disc at his web site.

Spoon

Spoon – I Turn My Camera On

Spoon is yet another band that has 5 cd’s under their belt; thus making it very hard to decide what to play. But one doesn’t have to look far to get caught up in that dilemma. Their latest release “Gimme Fiction” was brought to market in May, 2005 and has been tearing it up ever since. The reviews on e-music and iTunes alone are a testimonial to the strength of the band and especially this latest release which brings a solid 45 minutes of good music.

You can catch Spoon Front Man Britt Daniel on the UPN hit show Veronica Mars on Wednesday, February 1st. The band also has a new video out. Check them out here and find out why they consistently find their way to the top of peoples favorite list. You may purchase their video’s and CD’s through e-music, itunes and the merge records online catalog.

PMB

Peter Moon Band – Shine

Peter Moon has been sort of quiet since his 2002 release “Postcards from Earth” and this is one of the best aspects of independent music. You can miss so much great material that it doesn’t become stale before its time. I just received the 11 song CD and I can tell you that it’s solid. I hope we get to hear some new material from him soon.

The Peter Moon band was just featured on Fox TV when the Music Factory did a feature on the band out of Nashville. If you like Matchbox 20 and Seal then you will like this band. Keep up to date with the band and purchase their CD’s on their personal website.

Bayadera

Baydera – Hold Me

Baydera comes to us from Orange Country California where they were just awarded two separate awards at the 2005 OC Music awards in Anaheim! The band walked away with both best World Band and best Live Acoustic Band. One listen to “Hold Me” and you will know why.

Bayadera is currently working on their new CD. The have an existing CD “90 Million Miles” available at Tower Records and CD Baby. We will hear more from them on an upcoming show so stay tuned!

Spooky Jones

Spooky Jones – Get Together

You will wish you were in California to see these guys live after hearing “Get Together”. This is a great song that boasts an energetic dance and party beat that sticks in your head! When people talk about being busy they must be referring to Spooky Jones. The band has 3 songs in the new movie “Left in Darkness”, formed a publishing company through ASCAP to facilitate all the requests they have had for film and TV, was chosen to perform at the 2005 Temecula Valley International Film Festival and won best Rock band at the 2005 OC Music awards. Fortunately for Spooky this is just a short list!

You can check out the Spooky Jones Rock n Soul Super Show at the band’s web site. Purchase their CD at Vision Enterprises and sign up for their e-mail list by sending them e-mail.
.
Clear Blue 22

Clear Blue 22 – Through with You

I really like all music and that makes it difficult at times because it is hard to mix genres on a show such as this where you have subscribers that may not be as diverse in their musical tastes. But my philosophy is very simple, if it’s excellent and I like it, well then, play it! Clear Blue 22 fits the mold. I didn’t even think twice about mixing in the country rock sounds of Jasmine West, Paul Reyes, Don Simpson and Dave Block. “Through with You” is just a sampling of the hard hitting guitar and vocals as you could tell from the opening mash up to the shows finish.

Clear Blue has been getting airplay across the world from Australia and Japan to Russia and the Netherlands. You can find out more about the band and purchase their CD at the bands personal web site.

Rantings of a March Hare Frozen in Time

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast (January 19, 2006 at 3:51 am)

I’m back!! This is the show you’ve all been waiting for! Some of you may be wondering why it takes a week (or more) to produce the show. Good question.

Grab Today’s Show

Click on the podcast icon below to download the show in mp3 format; it should automatically play when the download is complete (under a minute).

Today's SoundCast

The answer is not all that complicated. Basically I speak to or at least make the effort to speak to all the bands before I use their material on SoundTrip. This accomplishes 2 things. First it helps me form relationships with the bands. This is important because promotions are a two way street.

Second, and most importantly, I make the extra effort to obtain high quality encodings of the recordings. My goal is to produce the best available sound quality for both you the listener and the band; otherwise what is the point? Most downloads of mp3’s are already encoded at a subpar 128k. Mashing them up in the grand mix further degrades the lossy material. One word sums this artifact of mp3 wizardry up, crapola.

I have been comtemplating making flac versions of the show available; depending on demand. So by all means, please let me know if this would be of interest to you.

As time goes on I will build up a large enough library where the shows will start to come out more frequently. For now my goal is once a week!

Today’s show features the following Artists

Fisher

Fisher – The Life

Ron Wasserman and Kathy Fisher have already accomplished what most bands can only hope to achieve. The have a family, their music has been featured in movies, reached the top ten on Billboard and chronicled in Time, Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times. But this is just a small selection from their huge resume. The band has been featured on the Tonight Show and recently released a Toyota commercial featuring their latest single “Beautiful Life” that can be seen at their band website thefisherband.com.

Ok, enough about where they’ve been. Their journey underlies the true talent of the poet-singer-composer team from LA. Kathy’s velvety vocals and Ron’s compositions are too diverse to pin as a simple alternative-pop band. Together they form a powerful presence that begs to be played repeatedly as demonstrated in the SoundTrip opener “The Life”, a song that takes on Fiona Apple for her flippant attitude toward the music industry that many people fight to become a memer of.

By all means check out Fisher’s material on their personal band website. The following link will lead you directly to their new CD that can be purchased at Amazon.

Rantings of Eva

Rantings of Eva– Infrared

Here’s the sploofy props on Rantings; they rock! The Georgia band was just featured on stage at the 2005 Atlantis Music Conference and is in the studio working on a new CD for 2006.

These guys have been tearing it up with their guitar driven rock and mysteriously excellent vocals. I am a big fan of the Def Tones and the Stone Roses so it is no surprise that Rantings caught my ear as they find a middle ground somewhere in between. Check out their other material such as “Panic” on the band website and watch the latest video. The new CD will be one to watch for. Get on the band mailing list and let them know you are waiting eagerly for the release.

Ballyhoo

Ballyhoo– Longshot

Say Hello to Howi, Mista J, Dino and Blaze. Ballyhoo is listed as a groove rock band on Garage Band but I am beginning to suspect that this genre is being used for bands that don’t really fit into any one category. In any event Ballyhoo identifies themselves with 311, Hoobastank and Sublime. I think the vocals are a close match with Sublime backed by heavy Ska Rock instrumentals. These cats are fun.

I played Longshot but Ballyhoo fans will recognize another Ballyhoo clip in the lead in mash up on today’s show. That familiar “let’s get ready to rumble” line is indicative of the intensity and energy the band brings to the stage. Longshot is the compromise in Ballyhoo’s conficted arsenal of reggae ska rock personality.

What’s that? Did I hear a guitar lead? Thanks guys, too many bands of today have left the guitar lead behind. Ballyhoo shows that it is OK to include a lead and a bridge in one song! Check them out on their website. Ballyhoo has a new CD scheduled for release on January 24th.

MadHats

MadHats – Plastic Scissors

As usual I like to change things up on SoundTrip. I like to play good music period. Fans of Oysterhead and Primus will dig the latest song, “Plastic Scissors” from the MadHats. This fits my definition of experimental or jam rock. I love the jazzy rhythms, frippish change ups and serpentine bass against the deranged vocals. The digital goddess Beth (my better half) gives “Scissors” a thumbs up; what more is there to say?

MadHats hails from South Dakota. Stop by the band website or check out PodSafe to grab all their songs.

Dirtywhite Fashion

Dirtywhite Fashion – Throwing Stones

I came across Dirtywhite Fashion on one of my extended searches through Garage Band. I have a formula that I follow religiously when browsing the large band directories; pick a genre, close my eyes and click. It takes quite some time to find just the right song and Dirtywhite helped shorten my search with “Throwing Stones”. The song provides a solid mix of vocals, keys, guitars and drums that fit the bill for this show.

“Throwing Stones” is off their second CD “Reality Music”. The band comes to us from New York and is following up the success of their first CD “Thirteen”. The band recently signed on with Memory Lane Music group out of New York. Stones is one of many songs that have been getting attention from their latest release. Check out the single Sugarland as it becomes the bands 5th song to climb into the top 25 at Garage. You can buy the bands CD’s on their home site and on CD Baby.

Cush

Cush – Little Black Dress

Cush is everywhere. Podcaster, musician, publisher and management at Other World Productions seems to sum it up but likely only touches the surface. I even think he jams with Fisher!

One ot the best things about people like Cush is that he can appreciate that mp3’s need to be distributed at something higher than 128k. I was surprised to find “Little Black Dress” on Podsafe at 256k. Podsafe and 256k! Someone went out of their way to make podcasting of their material easy.

Little Black Dress is simply awesome. A 70’s style rock song with a modern mix of turntables, keys, clean delay and crisp harmonies. The production is top notch. This is how it is supposed to be done. Straight, simple and not over produced.

Brad Peterson

Brad Peterson – Nine

Brad Peterson joins us again on SoundTrip as the feature band of the month. “Nine” shows the diversity of his professional entourage and rock solid song writing with this jazzy number. My family and friends were vying for this song as the opener in the last show but as I said back then, Brad has too many great songs to choose from. The Red Album is a must buy for fans of music no matter what style you like. Get this album and be happy you did! Don’t forget to catch Brad playing at the Double Door in Chicago on Friday January 27th. Check out his website for more information.

Brad Peterson Killed the RIAA Gods

Posted by Trip in Show Notes, podcast (January 3, 2006 at 3:23 am)

Welcome to the first official SoundTrip SoundCast! This is a big step for me. I hope I can live up to expectations and present a professional quality Podcast that showcases the music of of Independent Artists who deserve to be heard, bought and played.

Grab Today’s Show

For those of you new to Podcasting all you do to listen is click on the podcast icon below to download the show in mp3 format; it should automatically play when the download is complete (under a minute).

Today's SoundCast

While Podcasting will not really kill the RIAA (nor should it) I hope we have come to a crossroads where it doesn’t take a small corporation to deliver quality music to eager listeners. Perhaps the execs in charge of distribution rights will get in line with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC and understand the true potential of podcasting as a medium of promotion. There is plenty of bandwidth to go around and the move from the airwaves to digital mediums should be seen as an opportunity for the smart people who brought us this far (William Hung excluded).

Today’s show features the following Artists

Brad Peterson

Brad Peterson – The Pharmacist

This song is off of Brad’s latest release, The Red Album. I really can’t say enough good stuff about Brad’s material. It’s hard to pin him down to any one genre as he mixes an intricate array of rock, country and acoustic flavors that grow on you with each listen. The guitar and bass work is excellent, very clean and bright, while it is thoroughly enjoyable to hear a drummer who knows how to color the music without overplaying. The more you play this album the more you want to hear it again and again. This is really great work.

Brad’s vocals are reminiscent of Adrian Belew and he has surrounded himself with professionals such as Grammy award winning guitar and pedal steel player John Pirrucello (who also plays with Keith Richards), former Sonia Dada drummer Larry Beers, Mike Troglia on guitar and Ted Peterson framing the songs with his bass and backing vocals.

You can see Brad Peterson live on Friday January 27, at Double Door if you are in the Chicago area. Visit the band’s website for more details.

Czeduce

Czeduce – Smashed

It takes hours upon hours of listening to come up with bands to play on the show. That’s why I was happy to come across these guys from London. It only took one listen before I knew that I wanted to feature Smashed on the show. I wish it could all be this easy. The band has a new CD coming out at the end of this month. The Czeduce website will have updated information on the release as well as their 2006 gig schedule.

Banooba

Banooba – Sinora

Banooba is classified as Groove Rock but I prefer Groove Funk. These guys remind me of a band I used to do sound for many years back; you know their shows are just a down and out party. The band is described on Garage band as having a musical style somewhere between rock, funk, jazz, jam-band, and reggae and I think that covers it well. Sinora is a powerful song with driving bass, reggae like guitar riffs and fun drums. The production is great and the vocals are excellent. The lucky band just finished playing a New Years Eve at Club 54 in the Caribbean.

They have a CD for sale on Garage Band as well as on the official band site Banooba.net.

Sheva

Sheva – The Closest Thing

Sheva comes to us from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her voice is reminiscent of Amy Lee from Evanescence, especially against the guitar work of Jimmy Landry on her upcoming album which was produced by Nickelback producer Dale Penner. We had a tough time picking from here collection of songs as they are all great. The CD will be released in early 2006. More Information on her album and tour dates can be found at Sheva’s website.

 David Henderson

David Henderson – We Gotta Go

Davis Henderson is a Blues guitarist out of Colorado who has been on the scene for more than 30 years. This song has some rhythm riffs that remind me of Clapton (How can a modern day Blues guitarist not be influenced by Clapton?) I especially like the Big Head Toddish style that is added to this song by the drummer who I imagine might play with The Henderson Brothers Band but I’m not sure since I couldn’t find a credit (I have a certain affinity for percussion) :-) More of David’s music can be heard on his personal site or at his PodSafe Audio refuge.

 Green Man

Green Man – A Conversation with Death

I love the heavy bass and gothic feel of this song. It sounds to me like a mixture of the much underrated Poe and Portishead. This is a great song for the clubbies and those who want to get that raw feel from heavy bass driven electronic darkness. They have 2 cd’s for sale on Garage Band.
